Where do I start?

Where do I start?

I am planning on homeschooling my now 2nd grader once he moves into 3rd grade – he is very bright and I just don’t feel that a classroom of 26 students is pushing him beyond the state testing requirements…another reason to pull him out of public school.

I am reaching out to you ladies in regards to Where to start? I’m not sure which type of homeschool education I want to do, however, I am thinking Charlotte Mason? Was it easy for you to pull your children out of public school to homeschool?

Any advice for surviving the first few months & the first year?

I love the idea of teaching him myself and using real=life experiences ie. Cooking, field trips, social media, etc. to teach subjects to him. I also love the idea that he can choose what topics we talk about during the year.

Any advice, links, etc would be GREATLY appreciated! I literally know NO ONE who homeschools so I feel like an itty-bitty fish in a really big scary ocean right now!

Thank you! <3

Hello! Good luck with your transition next year. I don’t have a lot of advice for you as we do not homeschool, BUT we did consider it, actually planned on it as a definite before we decided on montessori education. The best things I did to prepare were researching online (there are so many great review sites out there and you can get some really good info on different curriculums), and the very best thing I did was attend a homeschool conference.

I’m not sure where you live, but I live in NC and there is a big homeschool conference in Winston-Salem every spring. It consists of a huge book fair where you can see, touch, experience, curriculums and the materials and talk to representatives of the different companies, and there were lots of lectures on various topics from where to start, the legalities of homeschooling, to very specific topics. I learned so much at this conference.

Best of luck to you!

Thank you Jaime for your response! The closest Homeschool Conference that I can find is in STL {my home town} but that’s 3 hours away from where I live now & with # 2 arriving in February & the conference being in March, I’m not sure it will be doable. I have certainly turned to the internet for help, but I have to agree, I think seeing & feeling the cirriculmn is going to the best idea for us.

Pinterest has been quite addicting for teaching ideas as well! Haha
